
The cost for the 23rd Hands-On Science is $620 which covers accommodation, meals, tuition, and course materials.
Sponsorship and scholarship opportunities are outlined below.
Hands-On Science is fully residential. Full board for all participants is provided at Arana College, a comfortable Residential College adjacent to the University, from Sunday afternoon 15 January until Friday afternoon 20 January. This includes all meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), bed, bedding and towels.
Students who are Deaf or who have a disability are encouraged to attend Hands-On Science. Assistance, including sign language interpreting support, note-takers and laboratory assistance, is available to students who require it. All Hands-On Science participants are expected to live in Arana for the week. Assistance can be provided with both mobility and personal care for those who require this. Students requiring any form of assistance need to notify Rose Newburn (email hos@otago.ac.nz) by 31 October about their particular requirements so that we can endeavour to assist. Freemasons NZ Science Travel Award
The Royal Society of New Zealand and the Freemasons NZ are delighted to support students wishing to attend Hands-On Science 2012.
The Freemasons NZ Science Travel Award is available for anyone wanting financial assistance for travel and registration to attend.
Full or partial sponsorship available.

Service club sponsorship: Rotary, Lions club etc
Many students who attend Hands-On Science are able to obtain either full or partial sponsorship. If students require financial assistance, we suggest they contact a local service group (such as Rotary) or their School Board of Trustees. Science teachers or school principals may be able to provide assistance in approaching these groups. Please note it is important to start this process when you register for Hands-On Science as it takes some time and you need to have funding arranged before payment is due in November.
Disability Information and Support Grants
Grants have been made available by the University of Otago Disability Information and Support Office, for students who are Deaf or who have a disability. Students who are Deaf or who have a disability should discuss application for these grants with the Head of their Science Department, who has been sent details about HOS. Applications must be received by 31 October 2011.
Ngā mahi-a-ringa Pūtaiao scholarships
Grants have been made available by the University of Otago, for students of Māori descent. Students who are of Māori descent should discuss application for these grants with the Head of their Science Department, who has been sent details about Hands-On Science. To apply for a Ngā mahi-a-ringa Pūtaiao scholarship students need to complete a Ngā mahi-a-ringa Pūtaiao scholarship Application form. The student needs to explain why they feel they deserve the scholarship, and an indication of the benefits they expect to gain from participation in Hands-On Science. A letter of support from their science teacher should also be included.

Pacific Islands Scholarships
There are up to six full scholarships available for students of Pacific Islands descent. Consult the information sheet for more details.

Otago Institute Scholarships
The Otago Institute (Otago’s branch of the Royal Society New Zealand) offers up to four scholarships for students from Southland who are in financial need. The scholarship covers half the registration cost for Hands-On Science. Please contact your school’s Head of Science for more information.
Ministry of Health scholarships
These are open to South Island students of Māori descent, entering either year 12 or 13 in 2012. You can download the application form and additional information sheet here (Form for download). Applications for these scholarships need to be sent to the Kaitakawaeka Māori/Māori Community Liaison Officer, Frank Edwards, by Friday 7th of October 2011.
