Geology

Title

We live on shaky ground?

Description

New Zealand sits astride one of the world’s major tectonic plate boundaries. As a consequence, the geological environment is very active. One form of activity that has drawn a lot of recent attention is seismicity; ie. the generation of earthquakes by fault slip. Dunedin is within a seismically active region. In this project we will consider seismic hazard in the Dunedin region, and microzone areas for different responses to predicted ground shaking. We will also assess the possibility of liquefaction in the South Dunedin area, using geotechnical investigation methods.
