Title

Genius Genes and Amazing Enzymes

Description

Experience a snapshot of the biochemical world! You will apply techniques that scientists use every day to understand how genes and proteins determine life in a cell. There are thousands of genes in a human cell so to keep things simple we are going to concentrate on just one ‘typical’ gene and the amazing enzyme that it encodes. Most genes these days are studied by cloning them into bacteria first. You will prepare DNA from bacteria and have a go at DNA splicing and cloning and learn just how genius genes are! Then you will analyse the enzyme that is encoded by this typical gene, measure the reaction that it performs and find out why you can’t live without it.
